Deeper I. Artificial Intelligence in Video

(EXPERIMENTAL) VIDEO WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND A MODULAR SYNTHESIZER.

Eurorack modular synth music & deep dream / deep style imagery combined to make sexy.

The above video represents two months of work condensed into 2160 frames.

All-in this work reflects a little over seven weeks of elbow grease and head scratching. Processing the various forms of imagery completely commandeered my Mac's CPU and GPU for well over 48 hours.

Each of the five main video segments were separated into individual images which were processed then recombined into a standard working/intermediate video format (8 bit ProRes 422 at the highest settings) using Adobe Media Encoder. For a brief moment I considered doing the whole thing in 4K UHD but the time that would have taken...ooof... nahh.

The video has some of my own footage, some Creative Commons (CC0) stock, and NASA still image sequences that I converted into a smooth-ish timelapse. The effects were primarily done in Deep Dream Generator & EbSynth, then smooshed together in Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere.

EbSynth is one of the best pieces of free (and obscure-artsy) software I've used. To complete something like the video above without it would have easily taken six times longer, at the least. That time-frame is untenable to create something that pays nothing, and the results would be a thin sliver better if at all.

The Music

This music supporting this video was composed last year using the modular synthesizer shown in the photo to the right (or below on mobile).

For a couple of weeks I had a bunch of random footage (mostly Apollo & Gemini missions and timelapses from the International Space Station) from NASA that ran on a loop with the goal of saturating my eyes with spacey images to plug things in and yield something with a similar vibe sonically - spacey sounds.

Mission accomplished.

Hope you enjoy the video. Send me a message on the contact page if you have questions or ideas.
